The Imperial Metal Embroidery

The Architectural Art of Zardozi CRAFT

Raised Gold, Silver & Bullion Needlework Handcrafted in Awadh

Rooted in the rich craft traditions of Awadh, authentic Lucknow Zardozi is renowned for its intricate metallic hand embroidery and raised, three-dimensional detailing on fabrics such as silk, velvet and organza. The distinctive character of Lucknow Zardozi comes from the careful layering, shaping and stitching of metallic elements to create depth, texture and ornate motifs.

Traditional Zardozi is worked on fabric secured tightly over a wooden adda frame. Skilled artisans develop intricate patterns from prepared khaka designs and build detailed compositions using traditional materials and techniques. Elements such as dabka, kora, salma, gijai, zari and decorative embellishments are individually placed and hand-stitched to create elaborate floral, paisley, geometric and bridal motifs.

At Awadh Karigiri, this traditional Lucknow craftsmanship is combined with contemporary design development, careful sampling and quality-controlled manufacturing. Our artisans create custom Zardozi embroidery for bridal wear, couture garments, designer collections and bulk production, helping fashion brands source authentic hand embroidery directly from Lucknow.

What is Zardozi Embroidery?

Zardozi is derived from the Persian words Zar, meaning gold, and Dozi, meaning embroidery or sewing. It is a specialised hand embroidery technique used to create rich, raised patterns on fabric with metallic threads, wires, and decorative elements. Zardozi is one of the most recognised traditional embroidery crafts associated with Lucknow and the Awadh region, where detailed needlework has been developed for bridal wear, ceremonial clothing, and couture garments.

What makes Zardozi different from other embroidery styles is its distinctive three-dimensional appearance. Fine metallic elements are carefully selected according to the required texture and design, then shaped and placed by hand. Coiled forms such as Dabka and Salma, along with Kora, Zari, Gijai, Sitara and other embellishments, can be combined within the same motif to create different levels of relief, texture, and shine.

The embroidery is generally worked on fabric securely stretched over a traditional frame known as an Adda. Although a prepared design guides the artisan, the final character of the embroidery depends heavily on skilled hand placement. This is a detailed and demanding craft that requires experience, patience, precision, and careful control over the direction, spacing, density, and tension of every element. The result is a richly textured surface that reflects the distinctive character of traditional hand embroidery.

Zardozi Embroidery Techniques

Zardozi is created by bringing together different metallic threads, wires, and decorative elements, each adding its own texture, depth, and character to the design. Depending on the motif and finish required, skilled artisans may use a single technique or carefully combine several forms of handwork within one embroidered panel.

Dabka Zardozi

Dabka is one of the most recognisable elements of traditional Zardozi embroidery. This fine, spring-like metallic coil is carefully cut into small sections and secured onto the fabric with hand stitches. It can be shaped into curved lines, floral details, paisleys, borders, and raised ornamental motifs, giving the embroidery its characteristic three-dimensional appearance and rich metallic texture.

Precision Craftsmanship Roadmap

The Zardozi Making Process

From ancestral motif blueprints to meticulous metal anchoring, authentic Lucknow Zardozi moves through four disciplined stages.

01
Stage 01

Khaka & Tracing

Blueprints are drawn on butter paper, micro-perforated along contours, and transferred to fabric with natural chalk or zinc powder.

02
Stage 02

Adda Mounting

Foundation velvet, silk, or tissue is mounted drum-tight onto a 4-beam wooden loom to prevent fabric distortion during needlework.

03
Stage 03

Needle & Wire Work

Coiled Dabka, tubular Salma, and micro-wires are cut into micro-beads and hand-anchored stitch-by-stitch using micro-crochet aari needles.

04
Stage 04

Finishing & Inspection

Finished panels receive underside knot locking, gentle wooden flattening for uniform relief height, and moisture-controlled packaging.
